Earlier this week, on the weekly ProcessMAP EHS Leadership virtual roundtable, we had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Darryl Hill, Senior Vice President of Safety for FirstGroup, the largest transportation services company in North America. FirstGroup provides transportation services for business, education, health, social or recreation, getting customers where they want to be, when they want to be there. While FirstGroup operates five business units, including transit management, Greyhound, First Bus and First Rail in the UK, First Student is the largest provider of home-to-school student transportation in North America with a fleet of 43,000 yellow school buses. With £7.8 billion in revenue and 100,000 employees, FirstGroup transported 2.1 billion passengers in 2019.
As part of FirstGroup’s return to work strategy, the company formed a cross-functional team across numerous business functions to make decisions and communicate them to their employees. They are responding to varying state requirements and making modifications to the buses as required by each jurisdiction. FirstGroup has created its own portal to share updates and to disseminate the latest guidelines for returning to work.
The Safety team has worked closely with their Supply Chain and Procurement colleagues to ensure they have the right inventory and disbursement for hand sanitizers, face coverings and masks. First Student has adapted its Driver Training Processes to adhere to social distancing requirements and guidelines, leveraging virtualized training and working closely with the Field Safety Organization, the Corporate Safety team was able to provide high-quality instruction and training based upon the available technology and training protocol.
FirstGroup has been using the ProcessMAP Audit Management as well as the Activity management solutions, along with the library of Reviqo Ready-to-Use mobile apps. About a year ago, FirstGroup identified a need in their organization related to their site safety reviews. What began as a manual, labor-intensive process has now been streamlined to where the safety team can view data analytics dashboards, regulatory boards, and create internal reports for senior management. The company has created a workflow to enable the team to work through a safety review or audit until the action is closed and completed.
FirstGroup created a Site Safety Review audit questionnaire, which allows safety leaders to review the safety-critical behaviors that are needed, such as ascending or descending off the bus steps, segregating occupational injuries such as slips, trips and falls. Going forward, FirstGroup plans to utilize the tool as a tracking mechanism to prevent and manage injuries. The company also expects to leverage ProcessMAP’s Mobile App capability as part of their Site Safety Review Process.
